Miyoo Flip review: the best clamshell retro handheld?

Editor Score: 8.3 / 10

The Miyoo Flip is the only clamshell retro handheld worth buying right now. It takes the Miyoo Mini Plus formula — great screen, OnionOS, compact size — and wraps it in a folding GBA SP-inspired shell. The result is genuinely unique in a market full of rectangular slabs.

After two weeks of daily use, here’s the honest verdict.

What’s in the box

  • Miyoo Flip handheld
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Screen protector (pre-applied)
  • Quick start card

Build quality is solid for the price. The hinge feels sturdy — no wobble when open, snaps shut with a satisfying click. The plastic shell has a slight texture that helps with grip.

Design & form factor

The clamshell design is the Flip’s defining feature. Closed, it’s 90×55×20mm — genuinely pocketable in a way that most handhelds aren’t. Open, it’s a standard landscape handheld with a 3.95” screen.

The hinge advantage: The screen is always protected when closed. No screen scratches from keys in your pocket, no accidental button presses in a bag. For daily carry, this matters more than it sounds.

The GBA SP comparison is obvious and intentional. If you have nostalgia for that form factor, the Flip delivers it.

Weight: 130g closed. Light enough to forget it’s in your pocket.

Screen

3.95” IPS, 640×480, 202 PPI, 4:3 aspect ratio

The screen is excellent for classic gaming. The 4:3 ratio means perfect integer scaling for Game Boy, GBA, NES, SNES, and PS1 — no black bars, no blurring.

The IPS panel has good viewing angles and accurate colors. Brightness is adequate for indoor use; direct sunlight is challenging (as with most IPS panels at this price).

Performance

The Allwinner A133 Plus handles everything up to PS1 without issues. GBA, NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis run at locked 60fps. PS1 performance is good — most games run smoothly, with occasional frame drops in demanding titles.

N64: Playable for most games, but not perfect. Expect some slowdowns in demanding titles like Majora’s Mask.

PSP: Poor. The hardware isn’t capable. Don’t buy the Flip for PSP.

PS2: Not possible.

Firmware: OnionOS

The Flip runs OnionOS — the same excellent firmware as the Miyoo Mini Plus. This is a major advantage. OnionOS gives you:

  • Clean, themeable interface
  • RetroAchievements integration
  • Wi-Fi artwork scraping
  • Instant sleep/resume
  • Package manager for add-ons

Setup takes about 20 minutes. Full installation guide →

Controls

D-pad: Excellent. One of the best d-pads at this price point — precise, comfortable for long sessions.

Face buttons: Good. Responsive with appropriate travel.

Shoulder buttons: Four shoulder buttons (L1/R1/L2/R2). Adequate for classic gaming.

Analog sticks: None. This is the Flip’s biggest limitation. No PSP, no games requiring right-stick input.

Verdict: For Game Boy through PS1, the controls are excellent. The lack of analog sticks is a real constraint for anything beyond that.

Battery life

2500mAh battery, rated 5–7 hours

In testing: 6.5 hours playing SNES games at medium brightness. About 5 hours for PS1. Charging via USB-C takes approximately 2 hours.

The clamshell design means you can close the device mid-game and it enters sleep mode automatically — no fumbling for a power button.

Pros & cons

  • ✅ Unique clamshell design protects the screen
  • ✅ OnionOS support — best firmware in the budget category

Cons:

  • ❌ No analog sticks — limits PSP and modern-style games
  • ❌ No Bluetooth
  • ❌ 2500mAh battery is smaller than the Miyoo Mini Plus (3000mAh)
  • ❌ $79 is $20 more than the Miyoo Mini Plus for a more limited device

Who should buy the Miyoo Flip?

Buy it if:

  • You love the GBA SP form factor
  • Daily carry and screen protection matter to you
  • You mainly play Game Boy, GBA, NES, SNES, PS1
  • You want OnionOS on a unique device

Skip it if:

  • You need analog sticks (get the RG35XX H instead)
  • Budget is tight (the Miyoo Mini Plus at $59 is better value)
  • You want PSP or PS2 capability

Verdict

The Miyoo Flip earns its 8.3/10 by doing something no other budget handheld does: combining OnionOS with a clamshell design that’s genuinely practical for daily carry. It’s not the best value (the Miyoo Mini Plus is), but it’s the best option if the form factor matters to you.
