How to set up Retroid Pocket 5 for retro gaming (2025)

The Retroid Pocket 5 runs Android, which makes it more capable than simpler Linux handhelds but also means there’s more to configure. This guide goes from unboxing to playing PS2 games.

What’s in the box

  • Retroid Pocket 5 handheld
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Quick start guide
  • Screen protector (pre-applied on some units)

You’ll also need:

  • MicroSD card (128GB+ recommended for game storage)
  • Wi-Fi connection (for downloading emulators and updates)
  • Game ROMs and BIOS files

Step 1: Initial boot and Android setup

  1. Charge your device to at least 50% before first setup
  2. Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds
  3. Follow the Android setup wizard:
    • Select language
    • Connect to Wi-Fi
    • Skip Google account (optional — not needed for emulation)
    • Set time zone

The Retroid Pocket 5 runs a customized Android with gaming-focused features pre-installed.

Step 2: Install a frontend (Daijishō)

While you can launch emulators individually, a frontend provides a unified game library experience. We recommend Daijishō:

  1. Open the Google Play Store (or use the pre-installed app store)
  2. Search for Daijishō
  3. Install and open it
  4. Grant storage permissions when prompted
  5. Daijishō will scan for games once you add ROMs

Why Daijishō? It’s designed specifically for Android gaming handhelds. It auto-scrapes box art, organizes games by platform, and provides a clean controller-friendly UI.

Step 3: Install emulators

Here’s our recommended emulator for each platform:

DreamcastRedreamPlay Store🔵 Great
PS2AetherSX2 / NetherSX2APK Sideload🔵 Great
GameCubeDolphinPlay Store🔵 Great

Installing RetroArch:

  1. Download from Play Store
  2. Open RetroArch → Online UpdaterCore Downloader
  3. Download these cores: mGBA, Beetle PSX HW, Snes9x, Genesis Plus GX, FCEUmm

Installing AetherSX2 (PS2):

AetherSX2 is no longer on the Play Store. You’ll need to sideload the APK:

  1. Download the APK from a trusted source
  2. Go to Settings → Security → Enable “Install from unknown sources”
  3. Open the APK file to install

Step 4: Transfer ROMs and BIOS

  1. Insert MicroSD into your computer
  2. Create organized folders:
    Games/
    ├── GBA/
    ├── SNES/
    ├── PS1/
    ├── PS2/
    ├── PSP/
    ├── N64/
    └── GameCube/
  3. Copy your ROM files into the appropriate folders
  4. Insert the card into the Retroid Pocket 5

Option B: USB Transfer

  1. Connect the RP5 to your computer via USB-C
  2. Select “File Transfer” on the device
  3. Copy ROMs to the internal storage or SD card

BIOS Files:

Copy BIOS files to each emulator’s expected location:

  • RetroArch: RetroArch/system/
  • AetherSX2: AetherSX2/bios/
  • Dolphin: Usually not required

Step 5: PS2 setup (AetherSX2)

PS2 emulation is the main reason to own an RP5. Here’s how to get it running well:

BIOS setup:

  1. Open AetherSX2
  2. Go to Settings → BIOS
  3. Set the BIOS directory to where you placed your PS2 BIOS file
  4. Select your BIOS file (e.g., SCPH-70012.bin)
  • Renderer: Vulkan
  • Internal Resolution: 2× Native (for most games)
  • Frame Limiter: On (60fps)
  • EE Cycle Rate: 100% (default)
  • Widescreen Patches: Off (keep original 4:3)

Performance tips:

  • Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, and other demanding titles may need resolution dropped to 1× Native
  • Turn off Mipmapping for some games with texture issues
  • Use per-game settings — each PS2 game has different demands
  • Close background apps to free up RAM

Step 6: Controller mapping

The RP5’s built-in controls should be auto-detected by most emulators. If you need to remap:

RetroArch:

Settings → Input → Port 1 Controls → remap as needed

Standalone Emulators:

Each emulator has its own input settings. The RP5’s controls map as:

  • D-pad → D-pad
  • Left stick → Left analog
  • Right stick → Right analog
  • L1/R1 → L/R shoulder
  • L2/R2 → L2/R2 triggers
  • A/B/X/Y → standard mapping

Step 7: Display and scaling

The RP5’s 1080×1920 AMOLED display is portrait-oriented but used in landscape mode for gaming. To get the best image:

RetroArch:

  • Settings → Video → Scaling → Integer Scale: On
  • Aspect Ratio: Core Provided
  • Video Filter: None (for sharp pixels) or a CRT shader

PS2 / GameCube:

  • These output widescreen by default on the RP5’s 16:9 display
  • Use 2× or 3× internal resolution for crisp graphics
  • Enable Bilinear Filtering for smoother 3D textures

Use our Screen Visualizer to preview how each platform fits on the RP5’s screen.

Troubleshooting

PS2 games are slow

  • Lower internal resolution to 1× Native
  • Try software renderer (slower but more compatible)
  • Close all background apps
  • Check per-game compatibility on AetherSX2’s compatibility list

Audio crackling

  • Increase audio latency in emulator settings
  • RetroArch: Settings → Audio → Latency → increase to 128ms

Games crash on launch

  • Verify ROM file integrity (re-download if needed)
  • Make sure BIOS files are correct and in the right location
  • Update the emulator to the latest version

Device feels warm

  • Normal during PS2/GameCube emulation
  • Reduce screen brightness
  • Take breaks during extended sessions
